10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Corsicana, Texas
If you’ve spent any time in Corsicana, you probably know it for its historic downtown, small-town charm, and close proximity to Richland Chambers Lake. But there’s a lot more to Corsicana than meets the eye.
At Laura Smith Real Estate Team, we love helping people discover what makes Corsicana and the surrounding Navarro County communities such a special place to call home. So, we put together 10 interesting facts about Corsicana that you may not know!
1. Corsicana Was Named After an Island in the Mediterranean
Corsicana was established in 1848 as the county seat of Navarro County. The town was named by José Antonio Navarro, a Texas patriot who suggested “Corsicana” after Corsica—the island where his father was born.
Today, that unique name is one of the things that makes Corsicana instantly recognizable among Texas towns.
2. Corsicana Was the Site of Texas’ First Commercial Oil Field
One of Corsicana’s biggest claims to fame is its role in the Texas oil industry.
In 1894, drillers were looking for water when they unexpectedly struck oil. The discovery led to the development of the first commercial oil field in Texas—years before the famous Spindletop discovery near Beaumont in 1901.
The discovery transformed Corsicana and helped launch Texas into the oil age.
3. Oil Wells Were Once Drilled Right Inside the City
It’s hard to imagine today, but during Corsicana’s early oil boom, oil derricks were scattered throughout the city.
By 1900, hundreds of wells were operating within Corsicana. Some areas that are now residential neighborhoods were once part of an active oil field.
4. Corsicana Played an Important Role in Texas Oil History
Corsicana’s oil boom attracted entrepreneurs and drilling experts from across the country. The city became an important center for the early Texas petroleum industry and helped develop the knowledge and expertise that would later contribute to oil discoveries across the state.
5. Corsicana’s Oil Boom Happened Before Spindletop
When people think about the beginning of the Texas oil industry, they often think of Spindletop.
But Corsicana got there first.
Commercial oil production began in Corsicana in 1894, while Spindletop’s famous gusher didn't occur until 1901. That puts Corsicana at the beginning of one of the most important chapters in Texas history.
6. Wolf Brand Chili Started in Corsicana
Before Wolf Brand Chili became a grocery-store staple, it was a local Corsicana business.
Lyman T. Davis began selling his chili in Corsicana in 1895. Eventually, he began canning it and named the product “Wolf Brand” after his pet wolf.
So the next time you see Wolf Brand Chili at the grocery store, remember—it has Corsicana roots!
7. Corsicana Is Famous for Its Fruitcake
You can’t talk about Corsicana without mentioning Collin Street Bakery.
The bakery dates back to the late 1800s and became famous for its fruitcakes, which have been shipped throughout the United States and around the world.
That means a little piece of Corsicana has made its way into homes across the globe!
8. Corsicana Once Had an Electric Railway to Dallas
Long before modern highways made traveling between cities easy, Corsicana was connected to Dallas by the Texas Electric Railway.
From 1913 to 1941, the railway provided regular service between the two cities, giving residents another way to travel throughout North Texas.
9. Navarro College Has Been Part of Corsicana for Generations
Navarro College was established in 1946 after Navarro County voters approved its creation.
Its first classes began that September with 238 students, many of whom were returning World War II veterans.
Today, Navarro College remains an important part of the Corsicana community and the surrounding region.
10. Corsicana’s Historic Downtown Is Full of Stories
Corsicana’s history isn't just something you read about in a history book. You can see it throughout the community.
