Did you purchase a new home in 2021? Chances are if this is your new primary residence you are going to file for your homestead exemption! What is a homestead exemption and how do you know if your property qualifies? Take a look at the top FAQs to determine if it applies to you and if your home qualifies. 


What is a homestead exemption? A homestead exemption helps you save on taxes on your home. 

An exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation and lowers your taxes. For example , if your home is valued at $100,00 and you qualify for a $20,000 exemption, you pay taxes on your home as if it was worth only $80,000.


Who qualifies for a homestead exemption?

Those who live in their primary home can file for this exemption.


What types of properties qualify?

A homestead can be a house, condominium, or a manufactured home. It can include up to 20 acres if the land is also owned by the homeowner and used as a yard, or for another purpose related to the residential use of the home.


When can I apply?

You can apply through your county between January 1, 2022 - April 30, 2022.


What documents do I need to provide?

You will need to fill out your county's homestead exemption form and send in a copy of your drivers license. Your drivers license needs to show your updated address to match the form. Other options are also available for persons 65 years and older, Veterans or disabled, and require the same process.


Do I need to pay someone to do this? 

NO! You will receive tons of spam mail claiming you will need to pay money to file. This is not true and you should not hire anyone to do it for you, it will should only take about 10 minutes of your time. 


How often do I need to file for the homestead exemption?

Once you've filed a homestead on your home, you do not need to do it again. If you purchase a home this year, make sure your file for your new home.


Recent changes!!

You may now apply as soon as you close on your home, which is new for 2022 and the result of legislative action for the state of Texas. Prior to 2022, a homeowner had to wait until the following year to apply.
